North east furniture independent shuts without warning

20th April | independents | A furniture retailer with stores in Newcastle and Sunderland has cleared out its stock and closed, but is yet to confirm that it has shut its doors for the last time.

World Furnishings, which has stores on Fawcett Street in Sunderland and Ivy Road in Gosforth, Newcastle, is an independent selling a full portfolio of home furnishings including cabinet, upholstery and beds.

Customers who had paid for as yet undelivered furniture are understood to be concerned that the stores have been emptied and closed, but the firm’s accountants, Taylor Rowlands, denied the firm had gone bust. A council spokesman, however, said a liquidator appointment was likely to be imminent.

World Furnishings’ website homepage has also been shut down, although other parts of the site can still be viewed.
