Upholstery and cabinet sales rise for York independent, but profits fall sharply
16th July 2009 | independents | Profits at 50,000sq ft furniture store Rodgers of York fell by almost 85% in the year to February. The home furnishing firm’s pre-tax profit dropped to £53,000 compared to the £350,000 it made in the previous year.
The family firm is one of the largest single store furniture and flooring retailers in the country – and stocks leading supplier brands including Alstons, Hypnos, Cormar and Old Charm.
In-store improvements prompted a 2% sales uplift in cabinet and upholstery, but beds/bedroom furniture, carpets and curtains/accessories fell by 4%, 15% and 10% respectively.
No turnover figure was lodged with Companies House but it is estimated to be about £6-8m. Furniture, sofas and curtains represent 53% of the firm’s turnover, with carpets and rugs (22%) and beds and bedroom (25%) making up the balance.
The retailer also operates a small wholesale division.
