Troubled Scottish furniture manufacturer to be wound up; "No longer a viable business"
10th November 2009 | manufacturing | Aberdeen bed manufacturer Glencraft, which exists to provide skilled work for people with disabilities, has lost its long running battle for survival and has been put into liquidation.
As many as 50 people will be without work after council officials in Aberdeen, who last year stepped in to save the firm by buying and leasing back the company's factory, have refused to help further, saying the business is no longer viable.
The company is one of few in the furniture industry to hold a Royal Warrant, and besides bed manufacturing also undertook re-upholstery work. Glencraft management dispute Aberdeen City Council's claim that the business had no future, saying positive recent trading meant it could have survived if it had been given more time to turn around its fortunes.
