BFC furniture Fire Safety Guide slated for May launch

8th April | safety | The British Furniture Confederation is to launch its Guide to the Furniture and Furnishings Fire Safety Regulations in London next month.

The BFC, an amalgamation of the industry’s leading trade associations, will introduce the new Guide after what it describes as an ‘urgent need to clarify ambiguities and address misinterpretations’ among those responsible for supplying and retailing upholstered furniture.

Britain’s fire safety regulations have been in place for more than 20 years and are among the most stringent in the world. Now defunct supplier DeCoro was perhaps the highest profile firm to fall foul of the regulations, when it was forced to recall non-compliant sofas in the 1990s, sparking a dispute with its then sales agent Stuart Coleman.

MPs Madeleine Moon, who chairs the All Party Parliamentary Furniture Group, and Gareth Thomas, Minister of State for Trade, Investment and Consumer Affairs, will be among those in attendance when the new Guide is launched at Furniture Makers Hall on May 18.
