Furniture superstore to be created on ex-Debenhams site in the East Midlands

10th June 2009 | independents | A former department store building is to become a furniture hotbed, with a number of retailers moving into a disused site in the centre of Derby.

Local independents Silly Sids and Star Furnishings are to take temporary leases in a large multi-storey unit that was, until recently, home to Debenhams. Other furniture retailers are also expected to take space in the building.

Debenhams abandoned the site to move to a new store in the Westfield Shopping Centre, a new development on the other side of the city. The department store building, which has been empty since October, is just 100m away from Derby’s main shopping street, and in an area of high footfall thanks to adjacent bus stops that serve a number of the city’s largest suburbs.

Silly Sids is a discount operator with another store nearby while Star Furnishings trades from a large Long Eaton showroom.
